Description
I didn’t switch to Brave because of some big privacy scare.
I switched because I was tired.
Tired of ads everywhere. Tired of cookie popups. Tired of my phone heating up after opening just a few tabs. Chrome worked, sure - but it started feeling heavy. Slower. Cluttered.
So one evening, out of curiosity more than anything, I downloaded Brave.
And honestly? I didn’t expect much.
But the first thing I noticed was speed. Websites that normally took a couple of seconds to load just… opened. No flashing banner ads. No jumping layout. No random video auto-playing in the background. It felt clean.
And once you experience that kind of browsing, it’s hard to go back.
What really impressed me wasn’t just the ad blocker - it was how everything is built in. You don’t need extra extensions. Brave blocks trackers, third-party cookies, and even most cookie consent popups by default. I didn’t realise how noisy the web had become until it suddenly wasn’t.
I also tested it on public Wi-Fi while travelling. With the Firewall + VPN feature enabled, I felt more comfortable logging into accounts. Is it essential for everyone? Maybe not. But if you move around a lot or use café Wi-Fi, it adds peace of mind.
Another thing I didn’t expect to use much was Night Mode. Now I use it almost every night. Reading articles before bed feels easier on my eyes.
Let’s talk about Brave Search. I was sceptical at first. I thought it would be limited. But for daily searches — news, tech, random questions - it works perfectly fine. And knowing it’s not profiling me? That matters more than I thought it would.
Now, to keep this honest - it’s not perfect.
Some websites occasionally ask you to disable Shields (Brave’s protection system) to function fully. It doesn’t happen often, but it happens. Also, if you're deeply invested in Google’s ecosystem, the transition might feel slightly different at first.
But those are small trade-offs compared to what you gain.
After a few months of use, here’s what changed for me:
-
Pages load faster
-
My battery drains more slowly
-
I use less mobile data
-
Browsing feels calmer
-
I think less about privacy - because it’s handled
The biggest difference? I feel less like the product.
That’s not something I used to think about. But once you switch to a browser that prioritises privacy by default, you start noticing how aggressive others feel.
If you value speed, cleaner browsing, and actual control over your data, Brave is worth trying. You might install it “just to test it” as I did - and quietly make it your default a week later.
How to play
If you decide to try Brave, here’s how I’d recommend setting it up:
1. Install and Open
Download it from the Play Store and launch it. Setup takes less than a minute.
2. Let Shields Do Its Job
By default, Brave’s Shields block ads and trackers automatically. You don’t need to configure anything immediately - it just works.
If a site breaks, tap the Brave icon in the address bar and adjust settings for that specific page.
3. Try Brave Search
Use the address bar for searches and test it for a few days. You may not miss Google as much as you think.
4. Enable Night Mode
Go to Settings → Appearance → Turn on Night Mode. If you read at night, you’ll appreciate it.
5. Explore Brave Rewards (Optional)
If you’re curious, you can enable Brave Rewards. It lets you see privacy-respecting ads and earn small rewards. Totally optional - I tested it, but even without it, the browser is excellent.
6. Sync Across Devices
If you use multiple devices, set up Sync to keep bookmarks and history aligned securely.
Final Thought
Switching browsers sounds small. But it changes your daily digital experience more than you’d expect.
Brave didn’t revolutionise my life. It just made the internet feel lighter, faster, and a little more respectful.
And sometimes, that’s exactly what you need.
