Brave is a full-featured web browser that prioritizes privacy, speed, and user control from the moment you open it. Setup is super straightforward. Download the app, launch it, and it asks for basic permissions like storage for downloads. No forced account creation unless you want sync across devices.
The home screen is clean with a search bar powered by Brave Search (their independent, non-tracking engine) or your choice of others. Type in what you need, and results come fast without profiling you. Brave Search even adds AI-powered answers for quick info without clicking through pages.
Core things that make it stand out:
- Brave Shields. This is the heart of it. It automatically blocks ads, pop-ups, trackers, cookies that track you across sites, fingerprinting attempts, and upgrades connections to HTTPS. You can tweak shields per site if something breaks (rarely needed).
- Built-in Adblock and Pop-up Blocker. No third-party extensions required. It kills most ads on YouTube, news sites, and everywhere else, making browsing feel snappier.
- Brave Leo AI Assistant. A free in-browser AI for asking questions, summarizing pages, translating text, or generating ideas. Chats stay private with no recording or sharing.
- Firewall + VPN. Optional paid VPN for extra protection on public Wi-Fi, though the free firewall already blocks a lot of threats.
- Night Mode and Data/Battery Savings. Dark theme for easy reading, plus it loads fewer heavy elements, so you use less mobile data and keep your battery happier.
- Brave Rewards. Opt in to view privacy-respecting ads occasionally and earn Basic Attention Tokens (BAT) crypto rewards. You can tip creators or keep the earnings.
- Private Tabs and Sync. Incognito-style tabs that forget everything on close, secure bookmark/password sync if you set up a passphrase.
- Other Nice Touches. Blocks cookie consent pop-ups by default, removes tracking codes from links, supports extensions from the Chrome store, and has tools like screenshot capture or speedreader mode.
The app is free with ads only if you enable Rewards (and they are non-intrusive). Premium VPN is an in-app purchase for those who want it. Everything else, including core ad-blocking and privacy, costs nothing.
The interface feels modern and responsive, with smooth scrolling and quick tab switching even with many open.
My Testing Experience & Results
I used Brave like my main browser for everything: news reading, YouTube, shopping, social media scrolling, quick searches, and even some light work browsing. Tested on both Wi-Fi and Jio 4G/5G here in Gujarat.
What stood out positively:
- Speed is unreal. Pages load way faster because ads and trackers do not bog things down. YouTube videos start almost instantly without pre-roll ads in most cases.
- Battery and data savings are noticeable. I went longer between charges compared to my previous browser, and mobile data usage dropped noticeably on the same sites.
- Privacy feels real. No creepy targeted ads followed me, and Shields dashboard shows exactly what got blocked per page (hundreds sometimes).
- Leo AI is handy for quick summaries or translations without leaving the tab.
- Stable overall. Recent update to Chromium 145 kept it current, with fixes for background play and a new "Shred" tool to wipe site data fast.
A few honest drawbacks:
- Some sites act funny if Shields are too aggressive (like login issues on rare banking pages), but you can lower shields temporarily.
- VPN is paid and reviews say speeds are average, not great for heavy streaming.
- Rewards system is cool for crypto fans but optional and not huge earnings unless you view a lot.
- A couple of users mention missing small features like better notification thumbnails, but nothing game-breaking for me.
All in all, I give it a strong 9 out of 10. It is one of the best free browsers right now if privacy and speed matter to you. Perfect for anyone annoyed by ads, concerned about tracking, or just wanting a smoother mobile experience. Runs efficiently offline for saved pages, no major bugs in my sessions, and updates come regularly.
How to Use Brave Browser App (Quick Starter Guide)
New to Brave? Here is how to get going fast and squeeze the most value out of it. These steps helped me love it from day one.
- Download and Install. Search "Brave browser" in Play Store or use the direct link. Install and open it up.
- First Launch Setup. Grant storage permission for downloads. Skip account if you do not need sync yet. Set Brave as default browser if you want (Settings > Apps > Default apps on your phone).
- Customize Shields. Tap the lion icon in the address bar on any site to see what is blocked. Set global defaults in Settings > Shields (I keep aggressive for most browsing).
- Set Search Preferences. Go to Settings > Search engine. Pick Brave Search for max privacy, or stick with Google if you prefer.
- Try Brave Leo. Tap the Leo icon (usually bottom right or in address bar) to chat with AI. Ask "summarize this page" or "translate to Hindi" for quick help.
- Enable Rewards (Optional). In Settings > Brave Rewards, turn it on to see occasional privacy-respecting ads and earn BAT. Link a wallet if you want to cash out or tip sites.
- Add Sync or Extensions. For cross-device bookmarks/passwords, set up Sync with a code. Install extensions like password managers from the Chrome Web Store via brave://extensions.

How to use or install
If you decide to try Brave, here’s how I’d recommend setting it up:
1. Install and Open
Download it from the Play Store and launch it. Setup takes less than a minute.
2. Let Shields Do Its Job
By default, Brave’s Shields block ads and trackers automatically. You don’t need to configure anything immediately - it just works.
If a site breaks, tap the Brave icon in the address bar and adjust settings for that specific page.
3. Try Brave Search
Use the address bar for searches and test it for a few days. You may not miss Google as much as you think.
4. Enable Night Mode
Go to Settings → Appearance → Turn on Night Mode. If you read at night, you’ll appreciate it.
5. Explore Brave Rewards (Optional)
If you’re curious, you can enable Brave Rewards. It lets you see privacy-respecting ads and earn small rewards. Totally optional - I tested it, but even without it, the browser is excellent.
6. Sync Across Devices
If you use multiple devices, set up Sync to keep bookmarks and history aligned securely.
Final Thought
Switching browsers sounds small. But it changes your daily digital experience more than you’d expect.
Brave didn’t revolutionise my life. It just made the internet feel lighter, faster, and a little more respectful.
And sometimes, that’s exactly what you need.
